The Frontier Within
The Frontier Within explores a question that has shaped Hannes Bend's practice for more than a decade:
What if we could perceive our inner physiological world as directly as we perceive the external one?
The work imagines an immersive architectural environment in which breathing, heartbeat, body temperature and subtle physiological rhythms become an evolving visual landscape. Rather than presenting biometric information as numbers or medical diagnostics, the installation transforms invisible processes into light, colour, movement and spatial experience.
Visitors do not encounter a representation of themselves, but an evolving portrait generated from the living dynamics of their own body. The work proposes that awareness of physiology can become an aesthetic experience rather than a clinical one.
Originally conceived in 2015 during research into bioadaptive environments, neuroscience and human perception, The Frontier Within remained unrealized as a physical installation. In 2026 the concept was digitally visualized using generative image and video models to communicate the original artistic vision.
